Once You Learn How To Compost At Home, It Will Become Second Nature

Many people these days want to know how to compost at home. Composting at home is quite simple. People should not be overly concerned about “doing it right”. There are just a few basics that need to be followed.

Do not include meats, oils, eggs or dairy products in your compost. You will also not want to include foods which have been cooked. The left over water however, from cooking vegetables is loaded with nutrients, and perfect for your compost bin.

A great way to ensure that you save all of your fruit and vegetable ends, peels, etc, is to keep a covered container in your kitchen sink. Simply open it up when preparing these foods, toss them in, and re-cover the container. You will also want to add all of your used coffee grounds to this container. Although eggs should not be included in your compost, egg shells are fantastic, be sure to save these too. At the end of each day, you will empty this container into your compost bin, rinse it out, and replace it in the sink. The items in this container are called “green” compost.

You will also find items in your yard to compost. Fallen leaves and mowed grass are excellent for composting. When you mow the lawn, simply rake the grass into a pile, and leave it. Every few days turn the pile over with a shovel. This way you will be sure to dry it evenly. Now you may put this “brown” compost into your bin. You may also add cut flowers when they are ready to normally be tossed in the trash. There are many other green and brown items that may be added, but listing them all would become a book. Just use some common sense.

Ideally, you should have two parts green compost to one part brown. However, this is not exact, so do not spend too much time worrying about it being perfect.

Add a couple of shovelfuls of dirt to your compost bin, add your green and brown compost, mix it a bit with a shovel, and let nature do the rest. Definitely add to your home compost bin daily, or whenever you want too. Now that you know how to compost at home, you are well on your way to helping your garden and helping the planet.
