How To Make A Compost Bin At Home

It is pretty easy and convenient to build if you know how to make a compost bin for the backyard. It takes about fifteen minutes and you will soon wonder why you didn’t made it sooner. Even if you live in a flat you can still make a compost bin, because it is quicker than the compost piles and provides you nutritious compost for all your plants.

First you need to buy or recycle a plastic bin that has a tight lid that is at least 24 inches taller. The lid will keep critters out and also moisturize the soil. Make about 8 or 10 small holes with a drill in the bottom of the container in order for the bin to have proper aeration. You can also drill some holes on the walls of the bin if it’s necessary.

Now place the compost bin away from the house in a shady area, preferably in the back yard. If you don’t have one, you may use the patio. Make sure that the compost does not stay in the sun or it will dry out. Place some dry leaves or shredded newspaper on the bottom of the bin, until it is filled about ¼. On the top of the newspaper place some dirt from your garden, until you fill the compost bin at ½.

Next you have to place food scraps or some paper products into the compost. These may be crushed egg shells, vegetables, fruit or paper towels. Stir a little with a stick or shovel and make sure that you cover all the food scraps with dirt. Moist it with water, but do not soak it. Place some the lid on the compost and add food scraps every other day and stir afterwards. The compost may be used after two or three months, as potting soil or it may be sprinkled as a lawn conditioner.
