How To Make A Compost With Organic Waste Material

Basically compost is a mixture of vegetable waste and manure. Microbes and other organisms feed upon this mixture of materials and the result is that the matter is converted into Furvic and Humic acids. It value to us, is that it improves the quality of all soils, so we are going to discus how to make a compost.

The modern father of making compost is Sir Albert Howard, although this material has been made for thousands of years. His method was invented around 100 years ago and in recent times this method has only been changed to adapt to different countries and cultures.

For instance in Africa it is made more quickly than it is in England because of the climate so the microbes are more active. In a good compost the amount of microbes found in one handful is more than the amount of people living on our planet! These enrich the soil by releasing the minerals locked into soil and make them available to the roots of the plants which need to feed on them.

Many things may be used to make compost in and an even an old tire will do, just place a board on top to cover it. Put down approximately 200mm of organic material mix it well and chop any bit pieces. Make sure that air is able to circulate freely and keep the compost damp, but not wet. You can speed up the process by adding a “starter” this would be a bucket full of animal manure, bone meal or mature compost.

Continue adding 200mm layers of organic material and finish your compost off with a a layer of soil, grass and leaves or sawdust, this will ward off flies and keep any unpleasant smells away. After about a week, your compost should feel hot when you push your hand into it. When it cools down in a few weeks, turn the compost, you have to keep it hot to kill fly larvae and weed seeds. In approximately three months your compost will be ready to use, but a week before your harvest it, add vegetable matter to the top of the heap to bring the worms up and use the underneath layers.
