Dry material like straw, leaves, or wood shavings is piled up and then mixed with equal amounts of garden and kitchen waste to get a pile that’s at least 3 feet all around. The moisture content will be that of a damp sponge, and in a year it will be ready to use.

Build a pile as you would for cold composting and then turn it every few days, relying on the heat of microorganism’s body processes to speed things along. Though it requires more work, you can get compost in three weeks or, as some people claim, even less.
