Organic Gardening Compost – What Can You Add In?
Organic gardening compost makes a huge difference in the size and health of your plants. Whether you are working with flowers, vegetables, fruits, or a combination of them all, effective use of waste from your home could be turned into cost effective gardening treatments that help your plants thrive.
Food sources grown with organic compost have been proven to yield larger, tastier fruits and vegetables. Flowers raised with compost are proven to grow more vigorously, produce more flowers, and remain more resistant to disease and pests.
The only trick is knowing what you should and should not put into a composting pile. It is rather straight forward once you get into it, but a mistake could ruin a larger portion of your compost.
Much of what goes into a home composting pile is leftover food items and paper products.
For kitchen scraps, you can use any type of natural scrap. This may include the peel from cucumbers, oranges, or other produce. You may throw in lettuce that went bad in the fridge or leftovers from your children’s plates. Egg shells are also great additions.
The only food items you want to avoid adding are meat based or grease. Leftover meat is only going to attract rats and slow down the rate at which your compost breaks down.
Paper products include newspapers, egg cartons, and any other paper product that normally goes into your trash and can break down easily. Avoid putting in colored ink, such as the glossy advertisements from the Sunday paper.
You can also use some garden scraps in your organic gardening compost. Just use reason and keep it to more natural things. Not only will you have beautiful, thriving plants, but you will drastically cut down on the amount of garbage you put into the landfill.
